Funding for Conference and Workshops
Funding is available for full-time academics currently employed at a British or Irish university for financial support to help in the organisation of workshops and conferences devoted to topics relating to German history. (* Please note that the GHS will not fund full costs of entire conferences and workshops, but it is happy to provide partial funding).
Applicants may apply for a sum of up to £1,000 to assist with the costs associated with the proposed event, which may include travel funds for speakers, accommodation, and registration expenses. Unless otherwise indicated, there are no restrictions on the topics or the approach that may serve as the basis for the proposal, and scholars from all periods of German history are invited to apply.
- Applicants must be members of the German History Society
- Applicants should submit (in electronic form) the following to the German Historical Society:
- An A4 proposal, maximum of 800 words, that should sketch out the theme and the format of the workshop or conference.
- Details relating to the proposed time and location of the event and the names of the organisers.
- A list of the proposed speakers, the costs associated with the event (travel, accommodation, registration), and a basic budget statement of how the Society funds will be used.
- A statement of other sources of funding applied for and/or received.
- In making its decision, the Committee reserves the right to favour those proposals which clearly demonstrate the following:
- evidence that the conference or workshop has placed a strong focus on German history and the themes relating to German history;
- evidence that the conference or workshop contributes to putting German history in a comparative or transnational framework;
- evidence that the event will engage a broad historiographical community and contribute to the exchange between scholars interested in German history;
- reasonable indications that the event will lead to further research activity, such as scholarly publications or ongoing dialogue;
- the likelihood that the Society’s money will make a tangible difference to the likely success of the project concerned.
* Please note that postgraduates planning to organise conferences may apply to the GHS via the postgraduate funding route. They should submit the same documentation as outlined.
