The German History Society is pleased to announce that Professor Neil Gregor has been elected as the new chair of the GHS (2026-29) at the society’s AGM at the University of Stirling. Neil will be taking over from Professor Mark Hewitson (UCL) who recently completed his three year term.

Neil is Professor of Modern European History at the University of Southampton, where he has worked since 1994. He has published widely on the economic, social and cultural history of C20th Germany, including two prize-winning monographs with Yale University Press (1998; 2009) and, most recently, The Symphony Concert in Nazi Germany with the University of Chicago Press (2025); his more teaching-focussed publications include work with Granta Publications and Oxford University Press. Alongside his academic work he serves on the academic advisory boards of the Documentation Centre at the Nuremberg Party Rally Grounds and the Leo Baeck Institute, London; he has also served on the academic advisory boards of the Wiener Holocaust Library, London, and the German Historical Institute London. For the GHS, Neil has served a stint as co-editor of German History (2009-2015) and, together with Professor Len Scales, was founding co-editor of the society’s OUP book series ‘Studies in German History’.

The society owes Mark Hewitson huge thanks for his careful, thoughtful stewardship over the last 3 years, and I look forward to working with the committee to ensure that our offerings continue to meet the needs of PhD students, early career colleagues and more established scholars alike as well as they possibly can.’
